Saturday, May 12, 2018, 7:30 pm: De Profundis

Two powerful works, some 300 years apart will inspire our May concert with music meant to transcend worldly concerns, taking the listener to suggestions of the divine through musical invention. We will open with voices from the sixteenth century, Josquin Desprez and Thomas Tallis, their settings of Psalm 130, De Profundis. This will be followed by

Bach’s cantata 150, “Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich”/“Lord, I long for you” perhaps his first church cantata of his long career which features the choir almost exclusively.  The BCC will be joined by strings and keyboard to paint a powerful picture of longing and spiritual devotion with Bach’s recognizable voice.

John Rutter’s Requiem, presents a twentieth-century portrayal of the earthly struggle with death and heavenly attainment utilizing Rutter’s skill with melodic line and rich harmonic texture. Rutter’s voice is always appealing to both the listener and the singer thanks to his ability to wed melodic invention with driving energy. The performance will feature our accompanist, Jennifer Goodine on organ with an ensemble of chamber players.
