Petite Messe Solennelle of Gioachino Rossini

By the end of the first quarter of the  nineteenth century, Gioacchino    Rossini was better known than        Beethoven thanks to his witty style  and melodic invention. Rossini's  operas had become famous  throughout Europe, but by mid-        century, he turned his genius to the  Mass. His Petite Messe Solennelle is  anything but "petite", full of melodic  invention and soaring aria-like  writing for soloists and chorus.                  Rossini combined the expressive  variety and vocal coloring of his  operatic literature with a dignity and  reverence appropriate to the  occasion. Rossini's Messe is a large-  scale work that is ideally suited to the  concert venue, enjoyed and  appreciated by both sacred and  secular audiences.
